Michael Pan had no way of knowing that a simple trip to visit family in Malaysia would result in a life-changing discovery. While exploring and learning about the history and traditions of his family, Michael also learned about the foods they ate as vegetarian Buddhists, including delicious mushroom snacks made from an old family recipe. The umami flavor and meaty texture made these snacks a satisfying replacement for meat, and one that Michael knew he had to share with the world.

Upon his return home to the Pacific Northwest, Michael began testing different adaptations to his family’s mushroom recipe from his own kitchen, eventually developing a product he could be proud of — all while maintaining his full time engineering job. In 2018, Michael launched Pan’s Mushroom Jerky in four tasty flavors inspired by his family’s recipe. Pick up a bag in your favorite flavor today at your local Market of Choice.
