In their search for healthy and affordable granola their kids would enjoy, Andrei and Arina Ilyin found few options at grocery stores that fit their standards. They discovered that most granolas are packed with refined sugar, are too crunchy for small children to enjoy, and are manufactured with fillers like bran, canola oil and flour. So, the Ilyins began experimenting, and, within a year they had the perfect granola recipe with only 5 organic and natural ingredients.
“Our purpose is to make healthy products for families like ours,” Andrei says.
Impressed with the quality and taste of their granola, friends urged the couple to package and sell it at the farmers markets. However, when the pandemic interrupted public markets, the prospective entrepreneurs had to start looking for other options.
One morning, Andrei brought a sample of their granola to the local Market of Choice in Bend, Oregon, packaged in a plain brown paper bag fastened with a sticker. Corbin, the grocery manager, knew he had stumbled upon something special. The granola was so delicious. He offered tips on how the Ilyins could improve the packaging and connected them with the Market of Choice Mojo Program which helped them get their product on the shelf.
