Market of Choice Announces Intent to Acquire Basics Market in the Hillsdale Neighborhood
EUGENE, ORE., Jan. 16, 2026 — Oregon’s largest independent family-owned grocer, Market of Choice, has signed a letter of intent to acquire the Hillsdale Basics Market grocery store, which would add a fifth Market of Choice location in the Portland metro area and become its 13th store statewide. The planned acquisition reflects Market of Choice’s commitment to serving neighbors with the products, service, and accessibility the community is accustomed to.
“Basics Market has built something special by staying committed to serving the Hillsdale community, delivering exceptional high-quality food, and investing in an outstanding team,” says Zach Wright, president of Market of Choice. “Those values closely mirror our own, and we’re excited to build on that strong foundation. It’s also turnkey. With all necessary equipment and a great team already in place, we will be able to take over and continue serving the community with minimal disruption. It’s really a win-win for everyone.”
While the location has a smaller footprint than many Market of Choice stores, customers will enjoy an exceptional selection of local products, from farm-fresh organic produce and artisan-baked goods to specialty cheeses and sustainably raised beef, pork, and seafood.
“I approached Market of Choice because I wanted to find an organization that shares our values around caring for employees, investing in the community, and supporting local producers and makers,” says Chuck Eggert, founder of Basics Market. “The legacy of Rick Wright and now the continued leadership from Zach make Market of Choice the perfect fit on every level.”
Market of Choice does not anticipate any major disruptions in service and will remain open throughout the transition. Wright intends to retain current staff and expects the transition to be completed within 90 days of the contract being approved.

Why is Market of Choice looking to purchase Basics Market in Hillsdale?
The planned acquisition reflects our commitment to serving the Hillsdale community with the products, service, and accessibility they are accustomed to. Like Market of Choice, Basics Market in Hillsdale has a strong commitment to the local community, a similar customer base to ours, an exceptional staff and provides high-quality organic, natural and conventional food choices. In addition to our values matching closely, the store is move-in ready with all the necessary equipment and people to continue to serve the local community with little to no disruption.
This location and specific store are a good fit for Market of Choice, and we are excited to build on the already strong foundation.
When will you move in?
Because the space is currently a grocery store, it is in “move-in” ready condition with all the necessary equipment, lighting and other fixtures. We should be able to move in about 90 days after the acquisition is approved and finalized, and we don’t anticipate any disruption in service.
How did this acquisition opportunity come about?
The owner of Basics Market approached us because he wanted Hillsdale neighbors to continue to have a community-oriented grocery store that would bring quality, local, seasonal offerings, and we shared similar values. He felt Market of Choice was the perfect fit.
Will you be making any changes to the store?
There may be minor changes, but our intent is to continue to provide an exceptional selection of local products, organic products and everyday essentials. Market of Choice has a wonderful meat and seafood department, artisan-baked goods, specialty cheeses, grab-and-go meal solutions, and an extensive selection of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.
What will happen to the current Basics Market employees?
We value the experience and connection to the neighbors that the current Basic Market employees have. And since we have a similar approach to food choices, customer experience and service, we hope the current staff will want to continue as employees of Market of Choice.
What will the experience be like when Market of Choice fully takes over?
Customers will enjoy an exceptional selection of local products, from farm-fresh organic produce and artisan-baked goods to specialty cheeses and sustainably raised beef, pork, and seafood.
