Spella Caffe

Spella Caffè – Portland

Coffee is what you put into it. For Andrea Spella, it’s heart and soul. Raised above his family’s Chicago bakery, Andrea began drinking espresso when he was old enough to raise a cup to his lips. As the owner of Spella Caffè in Portland, he develops deep relationships with coffee growers and roasts the beans himself, always aiming for the “sweet spot.” His beans boast a balance of sweet and bitter for a truly fantastic cup. You’ll find freshly roasted Spella beans in our Market Coffee Departments. Spella Caffè coffee and espresso drinks are also proudly served by our Portland-area Market Baristas.

Young Mountain Tea

Young Mountain Tea – Springfield

Young Mountain Tea began with a vision, right from the start – to help create a sustainable future for Himalayan tea farmers in India and Nepal. By working with farmers in remote mountain regions, many of them women, and by donating 1% of all sales to support farmer-owned tea processing facilities, Young Mountain Tea is contributing to a better quality of life for farmers and their families. The BIPOC-owned company, operating in Springfield, distributes a variety of Himalayan teas sourced for their quality and sustainability. These single-origin teas are unblended and unflavored and are made from the leaves of a single plant, Camellia sinensi. “From our rich, aromatic black teas that hail from Assam and Darjeeling to our strong, vibrant green teas from tea makers in Nepal and the Nilgiris to our delicate, complex, white Kumaon, the full diversity of tea is represented,” says company owner Raj Vable. The son of Indian immigrants, Raj grew up in Michigan. During his childhood, he often visited his grandparents who still lived in India. As a University of Oregon student, he worked in rural India. After graduation, upon earning a Fulbright fellowship, he traveled to the Himalayan regions, where he started Young Mountain Tea. “Our company’s work is about bridging the two worlds that my family spans – rural India and the Pacific Northwest,” Raj says.

Coffee Market Overview

Coffee

We take coffee seriously. When deciding whether to carry a particular coffee, we research the roaster’s sourcing practices, the quality of the beans, the roast profile and how the coffee cups.

We focus on local roasters, and closely monitor best-by dates to ensure our coffee is always fresh. When you need to grind, you can depend on our high-quality, in-store grinders to do the job while protecting the integrity of the beans.

Additionally, our Beverage Stewards receive ongoing training and cuppings, so they can help you choose the right roast. Stop by and check out our selection of locally sourced and single-origin coffees.

Tea

From loose leaf, bagged, and chai concentrates, to matcha powders, mushroom teas, yerba mate, and hand crafted local options, we have more choices in tea than most any grocer in town. And, we’re always leaning in to learn more about tea trends from those who truly know their stuff.

You see, tea and coffee are like wine in that the variety, terroir and farming practices greatly impact the flavor. That’s why we pay attention to how our tea is sourced, and focus on local makers that we know and trust.

Take a trip down our grocery aisle and find the right variety for you. Or, stop by our Barista to find a great selection of high quality teas steeped fresh, and ready for sipping on-the-go.
